I get this question a lot.
Whenever I meet someone new, the inevitable comes up, “So what do you for work?” While the jobs of a nurse or an accountant are self-explanatory, graphic design isn’t usually an occupation many people know much about. I usually get a polite response and glazed over eyes. So… what do we do?
f you look around, you’ll see the work of designers everywhere. The logo on your shirt; signs you drive past; the packaging from your afternoon snack; and even the layouts of your favorite social media apps. You interact with hundreds of designs every single day without even realizing it. So what does a designer do? Look around! While we are magicians at times, it's not as mysterious as you think.
The power of good design is unmatchable. Can you think of a successful company without a logo or branded colors? Yeah me neither. Design is essential to a business’s success. What would Coca-Cola be without their iconic red can and white logo? Designers create the logo, the label, the typefaces, and all of the other marketing materials that go with the brand.
Coca-Cola and many other popular brands have an image that you recognize immediately. I’ll let you in on a little secret…that’s the magic of graphic design! Like I said we are magicians sometimes.
Besides branding, designers control so much of the visuals that make up today’s consumer market. Now that we’ve talked about it, you'll start seeing design everywhere you go! Lucky for you, you aren’t married to a designer who points out every sign and packaging they see (unlucky for my husband).
